Gold Beach sits where the Rogue River reaches the Pacific, a remote Wild Rivers Coast town with long beaches, river canyons, fishing history and dramatic road trips in every direction.
HISTORY & CHARACTER
The Gold Beach area is part of the homeland of Native peoples of the lower Rogue River region. The 1850s brought gold miners and violent conflict that ended with the forced removal of many Native residents to reservations.
The settlement was first known as Ellensburg, after Ellen Tichenor. Miners had already begun calling the area Gold Beach after finding gold in beach sands near the Rogue River mouth, and the town officially adopted the Gold Beach name in the early 1890s.
When easily recovered gold declined, salmon fishing became central. Canneries and commercial fishing shaped the Rogue River economy before logging and tourism became more important. Gold Beach remains the Curry County seat and one of the coast’s most isolated incorporated communities.
DID YOU KNOW?
Gold Beach did not get its name from an inland mine. Miners found fine gold in black sands near the mouth of the Rogue River, giving the shoreline settlement the nickname that eventually replaced Ellensburg.

Gold Beach is a place to use as a base camp: the Rogue River, beaches, coastal headlands and remote forest roads all begin close to town.

Explore the river mouth and lower canyon by fishing, paddling appropriate sections or taking in viewpoints along one of Oregon’s most storied Wild and Scenic rivers.

Walk long stretches of sand south toward Cape Sebastian, looking for driftwood, agates, birds and broad views with fewer crowds than many northern beaches.

South of town, trails and overlooks rise above the Pacific for sweeping Wild Rivers Coast scenery and whale-watching opportunities.

The river crossing and harbor area make it easy to watch boats, tides and the meeting of freshwater and ocean.

NATURE & WILDLIFE
The Rogue River supports salmon and steelhead, while bald eagles, osprey and great blue herons follow the river corridor. Harbor seals and sea lions use the estuary, and gray whales migrate offshore. Roosevelt elk, black-tailed deer and black bears inhabit forested country inland from town.

SOUTH COAST ON SCREEN
The Sea Gypsies was filmed primarily around Gold Beach, and coastal scenes for Hard Luck also used the area. The science-fiction film 65 added nearby Meyers Creek Beach to its prehistoric-looking landscapes.
The Rogue River, broad beaches and sea stacks give filmmakers a wide range of settings, while the Patterson Bridge provides one of the town’s strongest landmarks.
GOOD TO KNOW
Gold Beach is remote. Curving Highway 101 and mountain roads make travel slower than mileage suggests, especially in rain or fog.
High water, wind and current can affect fishing and boating. Use experienced operators or choose shore-based viewpoints if conditions are beyond your skill level.
Keep fuel, water, food and a charged phone in the car before exploring remote beaches, forest roads or the Rogue River corridor.
