HISTORY & CHARACTER
Garibaldi was named by early settler Daniel Dodge Bayley after Giuseppe Garibaldi, the 19th-century Italian military leader and revolutionary. The unusual name gives this small Oregon port one of the coast’s more surprising international connections.
The town grew around Tillamook Bay’s maritime economy. Fishing, logging, shipping and the railroad shaped Garibaldi’s waterfront, while the protected bay offered a working harbor close to the Pacific entrance.
Garibaldi still feels like a place where people work on the water. Boats, docks, fish-cleaning stations and the old railroad corridor remain part of the everyday landscape rather than decorative pieces of a resort town.

Walk the waterfront and watch fishing boats, crabbing activity and changing weather move through the harbor at the north end of Tillamook Bay.

The public pier is a popular place for fishing, crabbing and simply watching the bay. Evening light can be especially good across the water.

Rail service once connected Tillamook Bay communities with inland markets. Historic track, trestles and depot-area features remain part of Garibaldi’s waterfront character.

Look across mudflats and shoreline habitat for herons, ducks, shorebirds and raptors, especially around quieter edges of the bay.

NATURE & WILDLIFE
Tillamook Bay supports bald eagles, great blue herons, cormorants, pelicans, ducks and migrating shorebirds. Harbor seals are found in the bay, and salmon move through the estuary and its tributaries. Roosevelt elk and black-tailed deer live in nearby forest and meadow habitat.

The Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad is the town’s signature attraction, carrying passengers along the bay between Garibaldi and Rockaway Beach on selected dates.

Rain, fish-cleaning areas and salt spray can make docks and ramps slippery. Wear shoes with good traction near the working waterfront.

Wind and fog can build quickly around Tillamook Bay. Conditions near the harbor may feel much cooler than a few miles inland.
