Reedsport sits at the meeting of the Umpqua River, Coast Range and Oregon Dunes, a river town shaped by railroad history, timber and access to some of the coast’s largest dune country.
HISTORY & CHARACTER
Reedsport grew rapidly with railroad construction in the early 20th century. The town was founded in 1912 and named for Alfred W. Reed, an early settler connected with local development along the Umpqua River.
Rail access helped turn the community into a timber and transportation center. Lumber mills, river shipping and logging shaped generations of work, while repeated Umpqua River floods led to major efforts to protect low-lying parts of town.
Today Reedsport serves as a gateway between inland river country and the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, with the nearby Umpqua estuary and Winchester Bay adding a strong fishing and boating identity.

The Dean Creek Elk Viewing Area east of Reedsport was created around open meadows where Roosevelt elk regularly gather. Large herds can often be watched from roadside viewing areas without entering the animals’ space.

NATURE & WILDLIFE
Roosevelt elk are the headline species around Dean Creek. Bald eagles, osprey, herons and waterfowl use the Umpqua River and estuary, while harbor seals and sea lions occur closer to the bay. Salmon and steelhead move through the river system, and dunes support deer, small mammals and coastal birds.

RIVER AND DUNES
Reedsport stands at the meeting point of the Umpqua River, Highway 101 and the Oregon Dunes. The historic swing bridge is a reminder that this has long been a transportation and timber hub.
Today the town is a practical gateway to dune trails, Winchester Bay and the Dean Creek Elk Viewing Area, where Roosevelt elk are often visible from roadside overlooks.
GOOD TO KNOW
Check recreation maps before heading onto the sand. Motorized riding areas, hiking zones and sensitive wildlife habitat have different rules.
Use designated pullouts and viewing platforms at Dean Creek. Never approach or feed elk, especially during calving and rut seasons.
Morning fog is common along the Umpqua and can reduce visibility on Highway 101 and local roads. Slow down and use headlights.
