Side by side on the North Coast, quiet Gearhart and lively Seaside offer two very different beach-town personalities connected by sand, history and the Necanicum River landscape.
HISTORY & CHARACTER
Gearhart grew from the land claim of Philip Gearhart, who arrived in Oregon in 1848. The community developed as an early coastal retreat with quiet residential streets, dunes and a resort tradition that included one of the West’s oldest golf courses.
Seaside’s recorded history is closely tied to the Lewis and Clark Expedition. During the winter of 1805–06, members of the Corps of Discovery established a salt-making camp near today’s Seaside to evaporate seawater for salt. The city later grew into one of Oregon’s classic oceanfront resort towns and was incorporated in 1899.
The Seaside Promenade, dedicated in 1921, became a defining part of town: a roughly 1.5-mile oceanfront walkway that links the beach, historic Turnaround and neighborhoods. Gearhart remains much quieter, with broad beaches, dune grass and a deliberately understated feel.

You can go from Seaside’s arcades and busy Promenade to Gearhart’s wide, uncrowded beach and cottage-lined streets in only a few minutes. That contrast is a big part of what makes this stretch of the North Coast distinctive.

Walk or bike the oceanfront Prom, visit the historic Turnaround and enjoy easy beach access along one of Oregon’s best-known resort-town shorelines.

Visit the small historic site marking where expedition members boiled seawater to make salt during the winter at Fort Clatsop.

Explore the quieter beach, dunes and leafy village streets that give Gearhart its old-coast character. The historic Ridge Path is part of that early resort landscape.

The river creates a calmer counterpoint to the ocean and supports paddling, birdwatching and estuary habitat near the heart of Seaside.

NATURE & WILDLIFE
Roosevelt elk are frequently seen around Gearhart and nearby meadows. The Necanicum estuary attracts herons, egrets, gulls, ducks and other waterbirds. Bald eagles patrol the river and beach, while harbor seals and migrating gray whales can appear offshore.

LOCAL LANDMARKS
Seaside is defined by its oceanfront Promenade and the Turnaround at the end of Broadway, a classic gathering place beside the beach. Gearhart, just north, feels quieter and more residential, with dune-backed streets, broad sand and a historic golf tradition.
Together they make an easy two-town visit: lively boardwalk energy in Seaside and a slower coastal rhythm in Gearhart.

GOOD TO KNOW
Stay closer to Seaside if you want walkable attractions and activity. Gearhart is better when quiet streets and uncrowded beach time are the priority.
Elk sometimes cross roads and wander through neighborhoods, especially around Gearhart. Slow down and give the herd a wide buffer.
Summer can be sunny but breezy. Bring a wind layer for the beach even when inland temperatures feel comfortable.
