Bay City is a small Tillamook Bay community where oyster culture, working-waterfront history, quiet bay views and abundant birdlife create a slower side of the North Coast.
HISTORY & CHARACTER
Bay City was platted in 1888 by Winfield S. Cone, who named the new community after Bay City, Michigan, where he had previously lived. The settlement developed along Tillamook Bay when boats were still essential for moving people and supplies around the region.
Before the railroad reached Tillamook County in 1911, the bay served as one of the area’s most important transportation routes. Fishing, logging, dairy agriculture and maritime trade all helped shape the surrounding communities.
Tillamook Bay also became known for oysters. Shellfish cultivation and harvest remain part of the bay’s identity alongside salmon, crabbing and the broader estuary ecosystem.

Bay City’s name did not originate from Tillamook Bay itself. Founder Winfield Cone chose it as a nod to Bay City, Michigan — an unexpected Midwestern connection on the Oregon Coast.

NATURE & WILDLIFE
Tillamook Bay is productive estuary habitat. Great blue herons, bald eagles, ducks, geese, sandpipers and other shorebirds are common. Harbor seals use the bay, while salmon and other fish move through its rivers and channels. Black-tailed deer and Roosevelt elk can be found in the surrounding coastal forests and fields.

Bay City sits directly on Tillamook Bay, where working docks, oyster beds and broad tidal views shape the town’s character. It is a good base for travelers who want bay scenery without the busier feel of larger coast towns.
Kilchis Point Reserve adds wooded paths and local history, while the waterfront offers a close look at the estuary that supports the area’s fishing and shellfish traditions.
GOOD TO KNOW
Bay City is the kind of place where a pair of binoculars adds a lot. Estuary birds and raptors can be active even when the town itself feels quiet.
Mudflat, shoreline and bird activity look completely different between high and low tide. Check the tide table if wildlife watching is a priority.
Bay City is small. Combine a visit with Garibaldi, Tillamook or Rockaway Beach for a fuller Tillamook Coast day.
