Waldport sits where the Alsea River meets the Pacific, with a broad bay, crabbing docks, sandy beaches and a quieter small-town pace between Newport and Yachats.
HISTORY & CHARACTER
Waldport developed around Alsea Bay and the lower Alsea River, waterways that supported Native communities long before non-Native settlement. European-American settlement expanded in the late 19th century as fishing, timber, agriculture and river transportation shaped the area.
For decades a ferry carried traffic across Alsea Bay. The first Alsea Bay Bridge opened in 1936 as part of the major bridge-building effort that completed the Oregon Coast Highway. That bridge was replaced in 1991, but the crossing remains the town’s defining transportation landmark.
Waldport has stayed smaller than Newport to the north, retaining a practical local character centered on the bay, river, fishing and outdoor access rather than large attractions.

Before the first Alsea Bay Bridge opened in 1936, Highway travelers crossed the bay by ferry. The bridge helped turn the Coast Highway into a continuous north-south route rather than a chain of ferry crossings.

NATURE & WILDLIFE
Harbor seals use Alsea Bay, while great blue herons, bald eagles, osprey, ducks and migrating shorebirds are common around the estuary. Salmon and steelhead move through the Alsea River system. Black-tailed deer and Roosevelt elk inhabit surrounding forests, and gray whales pass offshore during migration.

Waldport sits where the Alsea River meets the Pacific, and the graceful Alsea Bay Bridge is its defining landmark. The estuary supports fishing, crabbing, paddling and abundant birdlife.
The town is quieter than nearby Newport, making it a useful base for exploring beaches, forest roads and the central coast without giving up everyday services.
GOOD TO KNOW
Crabbing success and safe access depend on tide, weather and current regulations. Check shellfish safety notices and licensing rules before harvesting.
Paddlers should plan around tide and wind. The river mouth and ocean entrance are not appropriate for casual paddling in rough conditions.
Most town services are close to Highway 101. If you are heading inland along the Alsea River, carry fuel, water and other essentials before leaving town.
