Newport, Oregon
Newport is a working fishing port and Central Coast hub where Yaquina Bay, two historic lighthouses, marine science, beaches and a lively Bayfront all meet.
HISTORY & CHARACTER
A little Newport history
Newport developed around Yaquina Bay after the area opened to non-Native settlement in the 1860s. Early visitors already came for seaside recreation, while oyster beds, fishing and shipping helped support the working port.
The city incorporated in 1882. Yaquina Bay Lighthouse, built in 1871, and Yaquina Head Lighthouse, completed in 1873, became enduring landmarks. The graceful Yaquina Bay Bridge opened in 1936 as part of the project that finally connected the Oregon Coast Highway.
Newport later became a center for marine research and education while retaining a commercial fishing fleet. That combination gives the city an identity that is both scientific and deeply tied to people who make a living from the sea.

Newport has two very different lighthouses
Yaquina Bay Lighthouse sits beside the harbor and is one of Newport’s oldest surviving buildings, while Yaquina Head Lighthouse stands farther north and is the tallest lighthouse in Oregon.

Newport can fill several days because its main districts — the Bayfront, Nye Beach and Yaquina Head — each offer a different version of the Central Coast.

NATURE & WILDLIFE
Wildlife to watch for
California sea lions are famous around the Bayfront, while harbor seals use Yaquina Bay. Gray whales pass the coast during migration, and Yaquina Head supports nesting seabirds, bald eagles and rich tidepool life. The estuary also attracts herons, shorebirds and waterfowl.

Movies Filmed in Newport
Newport appears in the filming history of Sometimes a Great Notion, which used several Yaquina Bay and central-coast locations. The city’s working Dungeness crab fleet later became the focus of the television series Deadliest Catch: Dungeon Cove.
That screen history fits Newport well: a real fishing port with two lighthouses, a landmark bridge and a busy bayfront rather than a manufactured set.

Practical tips for Newport
Plan by district
The Bayfront, Nye Beach and Yaquina Head are separate areas. Group stops by neighborhood instead of repeatedly crossing town on Highway 101.
Tidepools need low tide
Yaquina Head’s intertidal areas are best explored near low tide. Wear sturdy shoes, walk on bare rock where possible and leave animals in place.
Working docks are not props
Fishing gear, trucks and crews use the Bayfront every day. Stay clear of work areas and follow signs around docks and loading zones.
