Bandon is a South Coast town of sea stacks, Old Town streets, the Coquille River and cranberry country — beautiful on the surface and shaped by one of the most destructive fires in Oregon coastal history.
HISTORY & CHARACTER
The Bandon area is part of the homeland of Coquille people, whose history and traditions long predate the modern town. Euro-American settlement grew around the Coquille River, shipping, timber, fishing and agriculture in the late 19th century.
The Coquille River Lighthouse began operating in 1896 to help guide vessels around the shifting bars and rocks at the river mouth. Riverboats connected Bandon with Coquille and upriver communities, carrying lumber, dairy products, coal and passengers.
On September 26, 1936, wildfire swept into town. Highly flammable gorse helped intensify the blaze, eleven people died and roughly 80 percent of Bandon’s buildings were destroyed. The rebuilt town later developed an enduring cranberry culture and a strong identity around its beaches, harbor and Old Town.
DID YOU KNOW?
The bright yellow gorse seen around Bandon was introduced by an early settler from Ireland. Decades later, the oily, highly flammable plant became a major factor in the catastrophic 1936 fire that remade the town.

NATURE & WILDLIFE
Bandon’s offshore rocks support common murres, cormorants, pigeon guillemots, black oystercatchers and other seabirds. Harbor seals rest on rocks and sandbars, while gray whales and occasional orcas pass offshore. Bandon Marsh and the Coquille River estuary attract shorebirds, ducks, herons and bald eagles.

SOUTH COAST ON SCREEN

The area’s sea stacks, wind-shaped shore and links landscape let it stand in for settings that feel both unmistakably Oregon and surprisingly international.
GOOD TO KNOW
Low tide exposes more sand and tidepools around the sea stacks. Rising water can isolate rocks and narrow coves, so check the tide table before long walks.
Many offshore rocks are part of wildlife refuges. Keep your distance from seal pups and nesting seabirds and never climb protected sea stacks.
Bandon’s storm waves can be powerful. Stay off driftwood and wave-washed rocks during high surf and use marked viewpoints for storm watching.
