HISTORY & CHARACTER
A little Depoe Bay history
The Depoe Bay area was home to Native people connected with the Siletz region long before the modern city. The community’s name is tied to Charles ‘Depot’ DePoe, a Native man associated with the Coast Reservation era whose family lived in the area.
A post office established in 1928 standardized the spelling Depoe Bay. The narrow harbor entrance and seawall became defining landmarks as Highway 101 brought more motorists along the rocky central coast.
Depoe Bay incorporated in 1973. Fishing, Coast Guard activity and whale watching all became part of its identity, and the small harbor is widely promoted as the world’s smallest navigable harbor.

The harbor entrance is tiny
Depoe Bay’s harbor opens to the Pacific through a remarkably narrow channel cut through basalt. Boats time their passage carefully when ocean swell is running, making the harbor mouth as interesting to watch as the boats themselves.

Walk the seawall for open-ocean views and natural spouting horns that can shoot spray through openings in the basalt during strong surf.

Gray whales migrate past in winter and spring, while a smaller group often feeds along the central coast from summer into fall. Nearby headlands offer excellent viewing.

Harbor & bridge
Watch fishing and excursion boats navigate the narrow entrance and explore the compact harbor tucked immediately east of Highway 101.

NATURE & WILDLIFE
Wildlife to watch for
Gray whales are the signature wildlife, with major migrations in winter and spring and resident feeding animals often seen in summer and fall. Humpbacks, orcas, porpoises and dolphins are occasional visitors. Harbor seals, sea lions, pelagic birds, bald eagles and shorebirds are also common along the rocky coast.

Depoe Bay’s compact harbor is linked to the fishing-trip sequence in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. The narrow channel, harbor walls and open-ocean departure gave the scene a distinctly Oregon Coast setting.
Off screen, the harbor remains a center for charter fishing and whale-watching trips, with frequent gray-whale sightings from shoreline viewpoints.

Practical tips for Depoe Bay
Bring binoculars
Whales are often visible from shore without a boat. Binoculars make it easier to follow blows, backs and flukes from the seawall or nearby viewpoints.
Parking is limited
The central business strip is compact and popular. If the seawall area is full, nearby state viewpoints can offer equally dramatic scenery.
Stay behind barriers
Rocky edges and wave-swept basalt are dangerous in high surf. Use established viewpoints rather than climbing onto exposed rocks.
