Wheeler is a tiny bayfront community where Highway 101 hugs Nehalem Bay, creating outsized views of water, forested hills and changing coastal weather.
HISTORY & CHARACTER
A little Wheeler history
Wheeler developed in the early 20th century as a mill and railroad town and was named for lumberman Coleman H. Wheeler. Timber, rail transportation and the Nehalem River system connected the small settlement to the wider North Coast economy.
The arrival of rail helped move lumber and people through the valley, while the bay provided fishing and transportation opportunities. Over time, Wheeler shifted from an industrial town toward a much quieter community centered on its dramatic setting.
Today Wheeler’s defining feature is the view. The town sits directly above Nehalem Bay, where weather, tides and light can change the entire scene within minutes.

Wheeler’s compact downtown is squeezed between steep forested hills and Nehalem Bay. That geography means many spots in town look directly across the water toward the estuary and surrounding mountains.

Wildlife to watch for
Nehalem Bay attracts bald eagles, great blue herons, osprey, ducks, geese and migrating shorebirds. Harbor seals use the estuary, salmon move through the river system, and Roosevelt elk and black-tailed deer live in surrounding forests and fields.

What Wheeler Is Known For
Wheeler occupies a hillside above Nehalem Bay, giving this tiny town some of the best river, marsh and mountain views in the area. Its compact main street reflects its history as a rail and lumber community.
Today the appeal is quieter: browsing local shops, watching changing tides and using the town as a base for paddling, fishing and exploring the bay.

Practical tips for Wheeler
Plan paddles around tides
Nehalem Bay currents can be stronger than the calm surface suggests. Check tides and wind before launching and wear a personal flotation device.
Highway traffic is close
Wheeler is compact and Highway 101 runs through the center. Use marked crossings and be cautious when parking or walking near the roadway.
Small-town services
Wheeler has limited services compared with Tillamook or Seaside. Carry fuel and essentials if you are continuing into quieter areas.
