Nehalem is a small river town tucked between forested hills and Nehalem Bay, with a working-community feel shaped by the river, timber country and nearby coast.
HISTORY & CHARACTER
Nehalem sits along a river and bay landscape that has supported Indigenous communities for generations. The name Nehalem is Indigenous in origin and is commonly associated with the people and place around the lower river and bay.
The modern town developed as a commercial center for the lower Nehalem Valley. Fishing, timber, dairy farming and river transportation shaped the community, and the town was incorporated near the end of the 19th century.
Although Highway 101 brought through-traffic, Nehalem kept the feel of a small river settlement. Its location makes it a link between the ocean communities of Manzanita and Wheeler and the farms and forests farther inland.

Before modern highways, the Nehalem River and bay were transportation corridors as much as scenery. Boats moved people, supplies and natural resources through a valley where road travel was once difficult.

Watch the river move through town or explore appropriate sections by paddle. The river connects inland forest country with Nehalem Bay and the Pacific.

The small commercial core preserves the scale of a traditional river town and offers a good place to slow down between larger coastal stops.

A short drive away, the estuary offers birding, fishing, paddling and wide views where river water meets saltwater.

Backroads through the valley reveal farmland, forested hills and a quieter inland side of the North Coast that many Highway 101 travelers miss.

NATURE & WILDLIFE
The Nehalem River supports salmon and steelhead, while the bay attracts bald eagles, osprey, herons, ducks and shorebirds. Harbor seals use the estuary, and Roosevelt elk and black-tailed deer live throughout the surrounding Coast Range forest.

RIVER TOWN
Nehalem grew beside the river that shares its name. Its small historic downtown, river access and proximity to Nehalem Bay make it feel distinctly different from the beach towns a few miles away.
Kayaking, fishing and scenic drives follow the water through a green valley, while Manzanita and Wheeler are close enough to combine in the same day.

Salmon and steelhead seasons, closures and gear rules vary. Check current Oregon regulations before fishing the river or bay.
Nehalem is a small community. Fuel, food and other services can be more limited later in the evening than in larger coastal towns.
