Dunes City is a lakes-and-dunes community south of Florence where deep Woahink Lake, expansive Siltcoos Lake, forest and the Oregon Dunes create a landscape built around water and sand.
HISTORY & CHARACTER
Dunes City was formally organized in 1963 during a period when residents were concerned about federal proposals for a larger national seashore and the possibility of land acquisition. Incorporation gave the local community more direct control over planning and land use.
The city’s identity is inseparable from its lakes. Woahink Lake is unusually deep for a coastal lake, while Siltcoos Lake is the largest lake on the Oregon Coast. Both lie beside dune and forest landscapes shaped over thousands of years by wind, waves and sediment.
Unlike a conventional downtown-centered city, Dunes City is spread through wooded residential areas around the lakes, making the natural setting itself the main reason to explore.

Siltcoos Lake covers more than 3,000 acres and is generally considered the largest lake on the Oregon Coast, while nearby Woahink Lake is deep enough that part of its basin lies below sea level.

NATURE & WILDLIFE
Osprey and bald eagles hunt over the lakes, while ducks, geese, loons and other waterbirds use open water and wetlands. Black-tailed deer and Roosevelt elk move through surrounding forest. Fish species support year-round angling, and amphibians thrive in wetland habitat around lake edges.

LAKES AND DUNES
Dunes City is built around Siltcoos and Woahink lakes, just inland from the vast Oregon Dunes. The setting combines freshwater boating and fishing with quick access to forests, sand and the Pacific.
It is less a traditional downtown than a landscape of neighborhoods, lakeshore roads and recreation areas, which is exactly what many visitors value about it.

GOOD TO KNOW
Much of the shoreline is residential. Use designated public launches, parks and access points rather than private docks or driveways.
Open sand can erase obvious landmarks. Carry a map or GPS, know your route and follow signs separating motorized and non-motorized areas.
Coastal lakes can remain cold even on warm days. Personal flotation devices are important for paddling and boating in every season.
