Siletz is an inland coastal community on the Siletz River whose identity is inseparable from the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians, forest country and a long history of river life.
HISTORY & CHARACTER
The history of Siletz centers first on Native peoples. The Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians is a confederation of more than 30 bands whose ancestral homelands stretch from Northern California to Southern Washington. The Coast Reservation was created in the 1850s through federal actions that forcibly moved Native people from many western Oregon communities.
Federal termination policy stripped the Siletz Tribe of recognition in the 1950s. After years of organizing, federal recognition was restored in 1977, making the Siletz the first tribe in Oregon to achieve restoration. The Tribe remains a major cultural, governmental and community presence in and around Siletz.
The non-Tribal townsite was established in 1910 and incorporated in 1946. Logging, farming and river resources shaped the local economy, while the Siletz River continued to connect the community with the forests and estuary downstream.

Siletz is not a conventional beach destination. Its value lies in the river landscape, cultural history and the quieter interior of Lincoln County.

NATURE & WILDLIFE
The Siletz River supports salmon, steelhead and lamprey, species with deep cultural importance to the Siletz people. Bald eagles, osprey, herons, black-tailed deer and Roosevelt elk inhabit the river valley and surrounding forest. Beavers, river otters and a wide range of songbirds also use local waterways.

ON SCREEN AND KNOWN FOR
Sometimes a Great Notion used the Siletz River around Kernville as one of its central filming landscapes. The production captured the forested river corridor and the timber-country setting described in Ken Kesey’s novel.
Siletz is also the headquarters and cultural center of the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians. Visitors should approach tribal places, events and history with respect and follow guidance from the Tribe.

Fishing seasons, conservation closures and gear rules vary. Check current Oregon and Tribal information before fishing or harvesting.
