HISTORY & CHARACTER
A little Manzanita history
Manzanita was platted in 1912 and took its name from the manzanita shrub, whose Spanish name means little apple. The community grew as a small coastal resort beneath the dramatic slope of Neahkahnie Mountain.
The area is part of the homeland of the Nehalem people, whose relationship with the coast, river and mountain landscape long predates the modern town. Later development brought roads, cottages and visitors, but Manzanita remained smaller and quieter than many North Coast resort communities.
Today the town’s identity comes from the combination of a walkable village, a wide sandy beach and immediate access to the forests, headlands and Nehalem Bay just south of town.

Manzanita comes from the Spanish word for little apple, a reference to the small fruits produced by manzanita shrubs. The plant’s smooth reddish bark and twisted branches are common sights in coastal landscapes.

Walk miles of open sand with Neahkahnie Mountain rising to the north and views toward Nehalem Bay at the southern end of the beach.

Nearby trail routes climb through coastal forest to high viewpoints above the Pacific. Trail conditions can be steep and muddy, so check current access before hiking.

Nehalem Bay State Park area
South of town, bay, dunes, beach and forest create opportunities for walking, paddling, birding and watching the changing tides.

Manzanita’s compact center makes it easy to move between the town and ocean on foot, giving the community a relaxed, human-scale feel.

Wildlife to watch for
Roosevelt elk and black-tailed deer move through nearby forest and meadow habitat. Bald eagles, osprey, herons and shorebirds are common around Nehalem Bay, while gray whales can be spotted offshore during migration. Harbor seals, salmon and a wide range of estuary birds use the bay.
